Atala Schöck

Biography

Guest of the National Theatre Opera. The Hungarian mezzo-soprano Atala Schöck studied singing at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. While still a student, she began performing as a guest at the National Theatre in Szeged in the role of Fidalma in Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto. In Szeged she also obtained her first engagement and prepared the roles of Cherubino (Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro), Siebel (Gounod: Faust), Verdi’s Maddalena (Rigoletto) and Meg Page (Falstaff). Since 2003 she has worked on a freelance basis, appearing as a guest on a number of European stages. She has rendered the roles of Javotte (Massenet: Manon) and Tisbe (Rossini: La Cenerentola) in Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt, sang The Third Lady (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte) in Dresden’s Semperoper, portrayed Amphinomo and Melanto in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (The Return of Odysseus) at Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. In 2004 she debuted as Meg Page and Cherubino at Budapest’s State Opera and between 2004 and 2007 she performed in the roles of The Second Esquire and the Flower Maiden in Parsifal at the Bayreuther Festspiele (conductors: Pierre Boulez, Adam Fischer). Her repertoire also includes Mozart’s Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte) and Siebel (Gounod: Faust). Atala Schöck has won several awards at international singing competitions (Hungary, Germany, France). She has also performed at concerts – for example, in 1999 she sang in J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and in 2005 she sang Bach’s St. John Passion conducted by Helmut Rilling.At the National Theatre Prague she has performed the roles of Sesto (Mozart: La clemenza di Tito) and Muse and Nicklausse (Offenbach: Les contes d'Hoffmann), during the 2010/11 season, her repertoire will also include Bizet’s Carmen.For more information, visit www.atalaschock.com Update: September 2010
