Biography

The Austrian-Brazilian baritone Miguelangelo Cavalcanti is a soloist of the National Theatre Opera. In 2000, he made his debut at the State Opera as Count Luna in Verdi's Il trovatore.

He studied voice in Recife and Karlsruhe, at the Bach Academy in Stuttgart, at the Royal Academy of Music in London and in Paris. He continued to hone his skills with A. C. Medina, E. Saque and G. Hornik. He launched his career at the Teatro Nacional de Sâo Carlos in Lisbon. From 1995 to 2001, he was a soloist of the Oper Graz. He has been a regular guest at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, performed at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona and at opera houses in Leipzig, Hamburg, Cologne and Basel. From 2004 to 2011, he was a soloist of the State Opera Prague. Since 2011 he has been a soloist of the National Theatre Opera and the State Opera. At the State Opera he performed a number of key roles of the baritone repertoire, including Escamillo (Bizet: Carmen), Verdi's Rigoletto, Nabucco, Germont (La traviata), Count Luna (Il trovatore), Rodrigo (Don Carlo) and Amonasro (Aida), Donizetti's Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Puccini's Scarpia (Tosca), Wolfram (Wagner: Tannhäuser) and Jochanaan (R. Strauss: Salome). He has also appeared here as Guglielmo (Mozart: Cosi fan tutte), Lescaut (Puccini: Manon Lescaut), Monforte (Verdi: I vespri siciliani), Schaunard (Leoncavallo: La bohème), Marcello (Puccini: La bohème) or Presto (Poulenc: Les mamelles de Tirésias). 

He is also a concert singer, and remains faithful to Brazilian music (Heitor Villa-Lobos, Carlos Gomes, César Guerra-Peixe, Alberto Nepomuceno). He has been a guest at the Bregenzer and Salzburger Festspiele, the Beethovenfest in Bonn, the Attersee Festival in Austria, the Béla Bartók Festival in Hungary and the Carinthischer Sommer. Since 2015 he has been giving masterclasses at conservatories and universities in Brazil.
