Biography

Iurie Ciobanu was born in Moldavia, studied voice at music high school in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) with C. Negulescu, at the Conservatory Gh. Dima in Cluj-Napoca with G. Rosu and M. Budoiu and in Luxembourg with I. Pantea. In 1996, he made his debut as Don Ottavio (Mozart: Don Giovanni) at the Romanian National Opera in Timisoara, he has also performed at the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca, National Opera in Bucharest, Teatro Pavarotti in Modena, v Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, theatres in Magdeburg, Nürnberg, Wiesbaden, Salzburg, Graz, etc. In the 2008/09 season he performed as Almaviva (Rossini: il barbiere di Siviglia) at the Vienna State Opera. Since the season 2004/05 he has been a soloist of the Landestheater Linz. In 2006, he was a finalist of the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition; he won Traian Grozavescu Competion in Romania and Concours National in Luxemburg. His repertoire includes roles such as Mozart's Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) a Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Rossini's Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and Ramiro (La Cenerentola), Donizetti's Ernesto (Don Pasquale) and Nemorino (L'elisir d'amore), Nadir (Bizet: Les pêcheurs de perles), Verdi's Alfredo (La Traviata), Duke (Rigoletto) and Fenton (Falstaff), David (Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Lensky (Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin), Pelleas (Debussy: Pelleas et Melisande), etc.
