Biography
Over the last years the Swedish tenor Daniel Frank has established himself as one of the most interesting Wagner tenors of our time. He was born and raised in Uppsala, and studied singing with, among others, Christer Solén, Hans Dornbusch, Solvieg Ågren and Björn Blomqvist. Daniel Frank made his operatic debut in 2009 as John Sorel in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul at Folkoperan in Stockholm. Before that, he had worked as a rock singer, vocal coach, and music and drama teacher for ten years. In 2010 he made a transition from baritone to tenor although, for a while, he continued to perform baritone parts, such as Fernando Villabella in Rossini’ s La gazza ladra and Valentin in Gounod’s Faust. His tenor repertoire has so far included Peter Quint (Britten:The Turn of the Screw), Laca (Janáček: Jenůfa), Tamino (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), Don José (Bizet: Carmen) and Wagner’s Tannhäuser. Outside Sweden, Daniel Frank has guest appeared at the Deutsche oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, in Kiel, Weimar and Bern. In 2013, he created the role of Tannhäuser several times: in May in Düsseldorf, in July at the Teatro Jorge Eliecer Gaitan in Bogotá, Columbia together with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel, and in August in Lima, Peru. In 2014, he created this role at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm under the baton of Peter Schneider and at the Prague State Opera under the baton of Hilary Griffiths. Recently, he added to his repertoire the roles of Britten’s Peter Grimes (Bern), Beethoven’s Fidelio (Karlstadt and Weimar), Verdi’s Radames (Malmö), Wagner’s Lohengrin (Bern), Paul in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt (Karlstad), Siegfried in Götterdämmerung (Karlsruhe), Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos (Göteborg) and Siegmund in Die Walküre (Duisburg).
