Biography

The German lighting designer Wolfgang Göbbel has worked at theatres of such renown as the Schaubühne in Berlin, the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, the Royal Shakespeare Company, prestigious opera houses in Europe, the MET in New York or the San Francisco Opera. He has also collaborated with significant festivals (Bregenzer Festspiele, Salzburger Festspiele, Wiener Festwochen, etc.). An artist who has set the standards for modern theatre performance design, his creations have earned him acclaim worldwide. In 1997 he was nominated for the Lawrence Olivier Award in the “Outstanding Achievement in Opera” category for his lighting designs for the productions of Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (at the English National Opera) and Michael Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage (at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden). Two of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden productions in which he participated received the Lawrence Olivier Award in the “Best Opera Production” category: Benjamin Britten’s Paul Bunyan and Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, followed by other accolades. Wolfgang Göbbel had also taught at the Theaterakademie August Everding in Munich.
