Biography

Russian theatre and opera director Timofej Kuljabin graduated from the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS in 2007. In 2007 he joined the the “Red Torch” Novosibirsk Drama Theatre, in 2015 becoming its chief stage director. Since then he has made a series of productions, presenting a daring reinterpretation of the classical texts. The list of titles include, among many others, Pushkin’s Pique Dame (2007) and Onegin (2012), and Chekhov’s Three Sisters (2015); all three received the national Golden Mask Award and Three Sisters were presented by the „Red Torch“ Theatre at major Russian and international drama festivals. Outside his home turf, Timofej Kuljabin has worked with drama companies in Omsk, Riga, Yaroslavl, St. Petersburg, Moscow (State Theatre of Nations), Munich (Residenztheater), with Schauspielhaus Zürich (Nora after Ibsen, 2019) and Deutsches Theater Berlin (Fräulein Julie after Strindberg, 2020).

Timofej Kuljabin made his debut as an opera stage director in 2009, with a production of Prince Igor at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. His second title in this house, Tannhäuser (2014), turned into a political scandal, which was triggered by the circles around the Russian Orthodox Church and led to the cancellation of production after four showings. At the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow Kuljabin presented Don Pasquale (2016) and Rusalka (2019) and at the Opernhaus Wuppertal Rigoletto (2017) and Stravinsky’s Les Noces/Oedipus Rex (2019). Since 2020 Timofej Kuljabin has been a member of the artistic direction board of the International Theater Festival “Territoria” in Mosсow.
