Martin Matoušek

Guest of the Opera

Biography

Following his studies of clarinet, piano and saxophone at the Army School of Music, in 1991 Martin Matoušek began studying voice at the Prague Conservatory. He continued his voice studies at the Academy of Music under the tutelage of Miloslav Podskalský, graduating in 2001. While still a student, he was a permanent guest of the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň, performing, among others, the title role in Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. In 2001 he became a soloist of the opera in Ústí nad Labem and at the same time began appearing as a guest on the stage of State Opera Prague. His repertoire includes both opera and operetta roles, for example: Mozart’s Masetto (Don Giovanni) and Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Rossini’s Bartolo and Fiorillo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Puccini’s Shaunard (La bohème) and Gianni Schicchi, Dvořák’s Marbuel (The Devil and Kate), etc. As regards operettas, he has performed Count Boni (Kálmán: Die Csárdásfürstin) and Dr. Falke (J. Strauss: Die Fledermaus). He has also collaborated on several non-traditional theatre projects; for instance, the production Questioning the Heavens in Vain at the Archa Theatre, directed by J. A. Pitínský.
