Biography

Vladimír Morávek studied at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, from which he graduated in 1989. From 1989 to 1996, he worked as a director at the Divadlo na provázku theatre. Between 1996 and 2005, he served as artistic director of the Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové, which during his tenure was voted Theatre of the Year three times. Eleven of the productions he created in Hradec Králové received Production of the Year nominations. In 1998, his project Noci antilop (Nights of Antelopes) earned him the Czech Literary Fund Prize. From 2005 to 2017, he was artistic director of the Husa na provázku theatre in Brno In 2013, his production A Pig, or Václav Havel’s Hunt for a Pig was presented at the renowned international Festival d’Avignon. Also popular among theatre-goers have been his productions Hamlet (Klicpera Theatre), Three Sisters (Klicpera Theatre), and Theatre as a Plague (Municipal Theatre in Karlovy Vary), for the latter of which Vladimír Morávek received the Divadelní noviny Prize. He has also worked with Prague theatres, with the productions he has staged there including Rusalka, or Cabaret Undine (Theatre in Dlouhá), The Cherry Orchard, The Wedding and Cyrano (Vinohrady Theatre), and adaptations of the operas Tosca, Macbeth and Die Zauberflöte (National Theatre in Prague). Moreover, he has been invited to work in other European countries, including Sweden, where he has staged the opera Turandot in Gothenburg, and France, where he adapted Dostoyevsky’s short story A Gentle Creature at the L’Apostrophe theatre in Paris. Vladimír Morávek has made two acclaimed films: Nuda v Brně (Bored in Brno; five Czech Lion awards) and Hrubeš a Mareš jsou kamarádi do deště (Hrubeš and Mareš, Friends Come Rain or Shine).
