Biography

Ulrike Kunze studied mathematics and then, from 1973 to 1979, set design at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Dresden. 1976 was the birth of her son Ferdinand. After completing her studies, she worked as a stage designer at the Deutsch-Sorbisches Volkstheater in Bautzen. From 1984 she worked as a freelancer for two decades. She worked as a stage and costume designer in Dresden for the Staatsoperette, the Staatstheater and the Theater Junge Generation. She has also co-operated with the Nationaltheater in Weimar, the Freie Kammerspiele in Magdeburg, the Carousel Theater and other small stages in Berlin, the Landestheater Tübingen, the Landesbühnen Sachsen, Staatstheater Mainz, at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Zürich, often with the Staatstheater Meiningen and many other theaters. In 1989 her son Maximilian was born. From 2003 to 2017 she was chief stage designer at the Theater Junge Generation in Dresden.
To this day, Ulrike Kunze has participated in more than 140 theater productions. She has worked on opera productions with Vera Nemirova in Bonn and Lucerne. Ulrike Kunze gives also guest lectures at the Technical University in Dresden. In 2012, the Stadtgalerie in Radebeul displayed her creations within an independent exhibition. Ulrike Kunze’s works have also been part of several exhibitions held by German Federation of Scenographers, and in 2015, they were shown within the Prague Quadrennial.
