Biography

The Czech mezzo-soprano Štěpánka Pučálková is a regular guest of the National Theatre in Prague. She made her debut at the State Opera in 2014 as the Page of Herodias in Strauss's Salome, and at the National Theatre in 2018 as Charlotte in Massenet's Werther.

In 2012, she graduated from the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg and was awarded the Lilli Lehmann Medal by the international Mozarteum Foundation for her outstanding academic achievements. She has appeared at the National Theatre’s State Opera venue as the Third Lady (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), the First Maid (Strauss: Elektra), Suzuki (Puccini: Madama Butterfly) and Stéphano (Gounod: Roméo et Juliette). Since the 2018/2019 season, she has been a soloist at the Semperoper in Dresden, where she has portrayed the roles of Urbain in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots, Sesto in Handel's Giulio Cesare, Mercedes in Bizet's Carmen, the second solo voice in Schoenberg's Moses und Aron, Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, the Muse and Nicklausse in Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma, Lola in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana, and Hagar in the world premiere of Torsten Rasch's Die andere Frau. She appeared in concert at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and made her debut as Carmen at the Volksoper in Vienna. She has also performed at the Landestheater Salzburg, Landestheater Bregenz, Landestheater Innsbruck and Teatro Romano Fiesole in Florence, as well as at such major festivals as the Mozartwoche Salzburg, Salzburger Festspiele, Osterfestspiele Salzburg and Beijing Music Festival. In January 2019, she sang at the Mozart's Birthday concert at the Estates Theatre in Prague, conducted by Plácido Domingo, and in 2021 she was his guest at the opening gala concert at the International Music Festival in Český Krumlov.

In 2015, she reached the final of the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition in Vienna and also won the Best Female Voice accolade at the Concours International de Belcanto Vincenzo Bellini in Marseille. She was nominated for the Thalia Award for her portrayal of Charlotte in the National Theatre production of Massenet's Werther.
