Reinis Suhanovs

Reinis Suhanovs (b. 1985) is one of most recognized Latvian scenographers of the young generation who is also starting his career as theatre director. He studied scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Riga with the famous Latvian set designer Andris Freibergs. He gained his first international recognition when still as a student he participated in Prague Quadrennial in 2007 and was awarded the title of the Most promising young set design talent in the world. Four years later he was the author of the Latvian national exhibit in Prague Quadrennial 2011. In 2010 he obtained the Award for the best set designer in Latvia. Reinis Suhanovs has created set designs for more than 20 drama and opera productions. He is permanent member of Valmiera Theatre in Latvia, where he has most often cooperated with the stage director Viesturs Meikšāns (Ingmar Bergman’s Marionettes and many other productions). At the Latvian National Theatre in Riga he has created set designs, among others, for Goethe’s Faust and Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. With the opera stage director Andrejs Žagars he has cooperated on Verdi’s Il trovatore (Stadttheater Klagenfurt, 2010 and the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, 2011) and on Wagner’s Lohengrin (the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius, March 2013 and Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, May 2013). Reinis Suhanovs is a co-creator of Jānis Lipke Memorial Museum in Riga, which has been nominated for World Architecture Festival Award 2012.
