Biography

Russian-born baritone Petr Sokolov, a native of Irkutsk, graduated from the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow in 2015. In 2016 he became a soloist of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre, where his creations have included among others the roles of Don Ferdinand (The Betrothal in a Monastery), Marcello (La bohème), Taddeo (L´Italiana in Algeri), or Bolkonsky (War and Peace). Elsewhere, he appeared e.g. as Don Profondo (Il viaggio a Reims) at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. The 2018/2019 season has seen him in the roles of Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at the Theater Dortmund; Yeletsky (The Queen of Spades) at the Opera Stuttgart; and Mathias Wissmann (The Fiery Angel at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. In April 2020 he will make his debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, as Marquis de Posa (Don Carlo). He has made multiple concert appearances in Germany, the USA, France and Russia. Petr Sokolov is a finalist of the 2017 edition of the Neue Stimmen International Competition, and the 2019 edition of the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition.
