Biography
Demi-soloist of the National Theatre Ballet
Pavel Pišan was born in 1977 in Brno. Between 1987 and 1995 he studied at the Dance Conservatory in Brno. After graduating, he became a member of the Pavel Šmok Prague Chamber Ballet. It was Pavel Šmok who taught him the stage technique he applied in later engagements. In January 1998 he became a solo dancer at the F.X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec. The six months he spent there were extremely beneficial for him. He displayed the acting skills from previous engagements and further honed his technical virtuosity. In September 1998 he joined the corps de ballet of the National Theatre in Prague, where in 2003 he was appointed a demi-soloist. He has become an all-round dancer capable of applying his comic talent in Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew (Hortensio), elegance in Grigorovich’s Raymonda (Bernard Beranger), in The Nutcracker (the Spanish Doll, Harlequin) and the recent Youri Vàmos ballet The Nutcracker – A Christmas Carol (Harlequin, the Guardsman and the solo waltz pair). He has shown a deeper existential sense in Hampson’s Giselle (Hilarion and the Wedding Couple), Bregvadz’s Sleeping Beauty (the Master of Ceremonies), Vàmos’s Romeo and Juliet (Paris) and Swan Lake (Red Beard). He has also danced in Cranko’s Onegin, Jan Kodet’s Goldilocks, in Ballet Mania and Act III from the ballet Napoli. When it comes to the modern repertoire, he excelled in Ailey’s The River, Kylián’s Sinfonietta, Return to a Strange Land, Field Mass, Stamping Ground, Petite Mort, in Zuska’s choreographies Ways 03, Among the Mountains, Ibbur, or A Prague Mystery, Requiem, BREL – VYSOTSKY –KRYL / Solo for Three, and Conny Janssen´s Álbum Familiar.
