Biography

Since her debut at the Salzburg Festival as Aspasia in Mozart’s Mitridate, rè di Ponto (conducted by Marc Minkowski, directed by Günter Krämer), the young soprano Netta Or has become established internationally as a specialist in dramatic coloratura roles.

She was a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf from 2003 to 2009 and since then has made her debuts at such houses as the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Budapest Spring Festival, the Essen and Leipzig Operas, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris. As a freelance artist, Netta Or is a regular guest at many prestigious early music festivals, including Schwetzingen, Karlsruhe, Göttingen, Ludwigsburg, Innsbruck and Herne. She has worked with such renowned conductors as Daniele Callegari, Attilio Cremonesi, Ottavio Dantone, John Fiore, Diego Fasolis, Reinhard Goebel, Sascha Goetzel, Thomas Hengelbrock, Michael Hofstetter, Alexander Joel, Jun Märkl, Marc Minkowski, Stefan Soltesz, Andreas Spering, Christoph Spering, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Bruno Weil.

Highlights of recent seasons have included concerts with Ottavio Dantone and the Accademia Bizantina, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Matheus, Diego Fasolis and I Barocchisti, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Milan Cathedral, Fiordiligi in St. Gallen, Donna Anna at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Leipzig, Düsseldorf and the Klosterneuburg Summer Festival, Fulvia in Handel’s Ezio at the Schwetzingen Festival, Clotilda in Handel’s Faramondo during a tour under Diego Fasolis with Philippe Jaroussky and other artists, Die Fledermaus at the Opéra national du Rhin, a tour with countertenor Daniel Taylor and a marvellous song recital at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

The 2011/12 season took Netta Or back to St. Gallen and the Klosterneuburg Festival, where, after her successes as Fiordiligi and Donna Anna, she appeared in other major soprano roles, including Alcina and Countess Almaviva. These were followed by further debuts as Violetta Valéry (“. . . Netta Or does justice to every note, with flawlessly controlled lines . . ., she enthrals listeners, thrills them, moves them to tears . . .”) and another visit to the world of the Baroque at the Mannheim Mozart Week (“Soprano Netta Or displayed her brilliant musical and interpretive artistry . . . She revealed a fresh, fruity sounding voice with a rich, luminous core and sang with sparkling clarity up to the highest register. Netta Or put focussed suppleness into the lyrical ariosos and intensified the soaring ascending passages with sparkling brilliance and virtuoso attacks in the coloraturas.”)

Future projects include her debut at the Vienna Volksoper as Constanze, as Rosalinde at the Salzburg State Theater and at the Hanover State Opera as the Contessa di Folleville in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims. Netta Or will also sing the title role in Handel’s Alcina in the acclaimed cult production in Stuttgart, followed by her debut as the Queen of the Night and a return engagement as Donna Anna in St. Gallen. She will continue her busy concert career with Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Cologne Philharmonie and with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra.

The Israeli-born artist studied voice at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne and supplemented her studies in master classes with Nelly Miricioiu, Barbara Bonney, Helena Lazarska, Kai Wessel and Kurt Moll.

In 2008 Netta Or was nominated as best promising young singer for various roles at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and in 2009 she received the Sponsorship Award in Music from the city of Düsseldorf for her “outstanding musical achievements”.

Her discography includes CD releases of Demofoonte (Arts Music), Ezio (Oehms Classics), Ezio (Coviello Classics) and Mitridate, rè di Ponto on DVD (Decca).
