Biography

The Bratislava-born soprano Michaela Kušteková performed throughout Europe (the Czech Republic, Germany, the UK, France, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, etc.) as a member of the girls’ choir Cannens. She studied at the Bratislava Conservatory with Dagmar Podkamenská-Bezačinská and under her tutelage is continuing her studies at the University of Performing Arts. She has participated in a number of competitions, with her most significant successes being victories at the Imrich Godin International Voice Competition in Vráble, Slovakia (2004, 2012), at the Slovak Conservatories Competition in Žilina (2007), and first prizes at the Ferrucio Tagliavini competition in Deutschlandsberg, Austria (2011), the Rudolf Petrák Competition in Žilina (2012) and the Antonín Dvořák International Voice Competition in Karlovy Vary (2013). In August 2013 she became overall winner of the competition at the Summer School of Baroque Music in Holešov. While still a student, she performed the roles of Flaminia (Haydn: Il mondo della luna), Amelia (Menotti: Amelia al ballo) and Susanna (Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro). Within the Theatrica project, she appeared as Apollonia (Haydn: La Canterina). In 2013 she performed as a guest at the Teatru Astra in Malta, singing Despina (Mozart: Così fan tutte). Moreover, she has portrayed the role of Laurie in the opera 66 Seasons by the Slovak composer Marek Piaček. At the State Opera in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, she sang the roles of the Turnspit (Dvořák: Rusalka) and Leila (BizetLes pêcheurs de perles). Michaela Kušteková also performs early music, appearing as Atalanta (Handel: Xerxes), La Prêtresse de Bacchus (Rameau: Anacréon), Selene (Domenico Sarro: Didone abbandonata), etc., and regularly collaborating with ensembles specialised in early music (Musica Aeterna, Cuore Barocco).
