Biography

Michael Barry trained at Birmingham University and Central School. In 2001, he was appointed Director of Theatre Studies at Birmingham Conservatoire. He has directed and choreographed Britten’s Albert Herring, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen and Dido and Aeneas, Janáček‘s Cunning Little Vixen, Bernstein’s West Side Story (Birmingham Conservatoire), Puccini’s Tosca and Bizet’s Carmen (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra), Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Metropolitan Arts Centre, Belfast), Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges (Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester), Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, Holst’s Sāvitri and The Wandering Scholar and Vaughan Williams’s Riders to the Sea (Buxton Opera Festival). He was choreographer and movement director for Der Ring des Nibelungen, directed by Keith Warner (Royal Opera House). In 2011 he became an associate director to Keith Warner for Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at Bregenz, and subsequently choreographer/movement director for André Tchaikowsky’s The Merchant of Venice for Bregenz and the Polish State Opera. His further cooperation with Keith Warner include movement direction and choreography for Richard Ayres’s Peter Pan (Welsh National Opera), Hans Gefors‘s new opera Notorious based on Hitchcock’s spy thriller (Goteborg Opera) and John Harbison‘s The Great Gatsby (Semperoper Dresden).
