Biography

The German soprano Melanie Diener made her debut in 1996 at the Garsington Opera Festival as Ilia in Idomeneo. In 1997, she debuted with the same role at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. She had her international breakthrough with the part of Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (Metropolitan Opera New York, Covent Garden in London, Vienna State Opera, Paris, Salzburg Festival). Her Mozart repertoire also includes the roles of Elettra (Idomeneo) and Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito). Her successful debut in Lohengrin at the Bayreuth Festival 1999 was followed by invitations to portray Elsa at Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, in Munich, Dresden, Tokyo and Zurich. She has also established herself as a Richard Strauss singer; she has created Daphne in Vienna, Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Hamburg, Chrysothemis (Elektra) in Monte Carlo, Vienna and Zurich and Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) in Berlin, Strasbourg, Hamburg, Mannheim, Helsinki and Moscow. Her wide-ranging repertoire also includes Katya Kabanova (Berlin and Vienna), Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes (Vienna State Opera), Leonore in Fidelio (Zurich and in concert version in Paris and Washington), Sieglinde in Die Walküre (Dresden), Ursula in Mathis der Maler (Opéra Bastille), Isolde in Tristan und Isolde (Toronto and Strasbourg), Elisabeth in Tannhäuser under Gustavo Dudamel in Bogotá, etc. As a concert performer, Melanie Diener has appeared with outstanding orchestras all over Europe and in the USA (Philadelphia, Cleveland, Boston, New York).
