Lorenzo Ferrero, (b. November 17, 1951, Turin), italian composer of stage, orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, and piano works that have been performed throughout Europe and the USA.
Mr. Ferrero was initially self-taught, but later studied with Massimo Bruni and Enore Zaffiri at the Conservatorio di Torino from 1969-72. In 1974, he earned a degree in aesthetics from the Università di Torino, with a thesis on John Cage.
The Bayerische Staatsoper, the Berliner Philharmoniker, Danish Radio, ORF, RAI, Radio-France, and Radio Frankfurt, among numerous others, have commissioned works from him. His awards include the Premio Italia (1986, for Il fuga di Foscolo). His nine operas (Rimbaud, in 3 Acts; Marilyn in 2 Acts; La figlia del mago, for children in 2 Acts; Night, in 1 Act; Mare Nostro, in 2 Acts; Salvatore Giuliano, in 1 Act; Charlotte Corday, in 3 Acts; Le bleu-blac-rouge et le Noir, for marionettes in 2 Acts; La nascita di Orfeo, in 1 Act) have been premièred in Avignon, Munich, Verona and Rome, with additional performances in Europe and the USA.
In 1972-73, he worked at the electronic music studio in Bourges and in 1974, he collaborated with Josef Anton Riedl and the Musik Dia Licht Film Galerie Gruppe in Munich. In 1994, he finished the orchestration of the third version of La Rondine by Giacomo Puccini, which was premièred at the
Teatro Regio di Torino and then performed throughout the world and in 1997, he wrote the music for the opening ceremony of the World Ski Championship.
He has also been active in other positions, such as artistic director of the Puccini Festival (Torre del Lago), the Unione Musicale (Turin) and the Biennale Teatro (Venice). From 1991-94, he served as artistic director of the Arena di Verona, in 1999, was director of the Musica 2000 fair, from 1999 to 2003, has been artistic director of Festa della Musica in Milan, a showcase of classical, jazz and world music, and since 2003 he is General Director of the Ravello Festival.
