Biography
Born in Budapest in 1979, the bass-baritone Károly Szemerédy has emerged internationally as an important young artist at many theaters, including the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Teatro Real in Madrid, La Monnaie in Brussels, Palau de les Artes in Valencia, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Regio in Torino, Opéra de Lyon or Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. His recent successes include King Solomon (Karl Golmark’s Die Königin von Saba) at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and in Freiburg, Escamillo (Bizet: Carmen) in Budapest, Waterman (Dvořák: Rusalka) in Lyon, Orest (Strauss: Elektra) at the Flemish Opera, the title role in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell in Warsaw, and, most recently, Max Horkheimer in the world premiere of Benjamin, dernière nuit by Swiss composer Michel Tabachnik in Lyon. His other important roles include Don Pizarro (Beethoven: Fidelio), Athanaël (Massenet: Thaïs) or Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust and Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust.
A graduate of the Madrid Academy, Mr. Szemeredy first gained international recognition as the winner of the Jacinto Guerrero International Singing Competition in Madrid. Subsequently, he made his debut at Teatro Real in Madrid in 2007 as Lavitsky (Musorgsky: Boris Godunov). A dedicated concert artist, he has sung in Hungary, Italy, Romania, Portugal, and Spain.
