Biography

Born in Brno, Josef Škarka graduated from Prague Academy of Music in the class of Miloslav Podskalský. He has quest appeared at many Czech opera houses: in Plzeň (Mozart’s Figaro, Leporello and Commendatore, and Hermann/Schlémil in Les contes d’Hoffmann); České Budějovice (Sparafucile, Monterone, Zuniga); Opava (Basilio, Don Alfonso); Liberec (Steffano in Viva la mamma); Ústí nad Labem (Colline, Ferrando, Eremit in Der Freitschütz), the National Theatre in Prague (Enchantia, La fanciulla del West, Red Mary), and the National Theatre Brno (Figaro). At the Slovak National Theatre he sung Teodoro in Paisiello’s Il re Teodoro in Venezia. His successes at the competitons include second prize at the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary and first prize in Žďár nad Sázavou. In cooperation with cultural institution Nancy Operapassion and with Opéra National de Lorraine he was involved in the production of Puccini’s La rondine (under the baton of José Cura) and in Modena and Piacenza, he performed in Offenbach‘s Les contes d’Hoffmann (Hermann/Schlémil).
