Biography

Praised as “full-voiced, focussed and fearless” [Opera Magazine] and “ardent, fresh toned and promisingly tireless” [The Guardian], Jonathan Stoughton’s significant débuts as Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, The Prince in Rusalka and Siegfried in Siegfried have established him as one of the most exciting British Heldentenors to emerge in recent years. He trained at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio. His studies were further supported by the Wagner Society and by the Mastersingers. Jonathan is the 2017 winner of the Carole Rees Award for Advanced Musical Studies in Wagnerian Repertoire.
Jonathan made his professional début for Glyndebourne on Tour in the role of Števa in Jenůfa and has since been engaged by English National Opera in London, Opera North in Leeds, Longborough Festival Opera, Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Scottish Opera in Glasgow, The Chelsea Opera Group, West Green House Opera at Hartley Wintney, Dorset Opera and Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn. In Autumn 2018 Jonathan joined the artist roster at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden to be the official cover for Siegfried in Siegfried and Siegfried in Götterdämmerung. His roles include the Prince in Rusalka, Florestan in Fidelio, Siegfried in Götterdämmerung, Siegfried in Siegfried, Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Don José in Carmen, Radames in Aida, Gustavo in Un ballo in maschera, Alwa (Jimmy) in American Lulu, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos,Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana, and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer.
Recent concert performances have included Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, Das Lied von der Erde with Bath Philharmonia, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Sheldonian Theatre and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius at the Shaldon Festival. In opera galas, recent performances have taken him to the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Centre, Bridgewater Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Cadogan Hall and the National Opera House, Wexford.
