Biography

Inga Levant was born in St. Petersburg, lived in Tel Aviv and London, and is now based in Berlin. She previously worked as staff producer at the New Israeli Opera, and as assistant director in the USA, Belgium and the UK. Since 1993, she has worked as a freelance opera director, staging operas in many European countries as well as in Israel and Australia. She has concentrated chiefly on mounting new or little known operas, as well as on unconventional approaches to the traditional repertoire. Figuring on the list of her productions so far are: Il trovatore  for Opera North (UK), Salome  and Boris Godunov  for Staatstheater Stuttgart, Eugene Onegin for Nationaltheater Mannheim, Otello for Opernhaus Kiel, Drei Schwestern by Peter Eötvös for Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf, Kullervo by Aulis Sallinen and Carmen for Saarländisches Staatstheater, Saarbrücken, Šárka by Zdeněk Fibich for the Wexford Festival in Ireland, Snatched by the Gods/Broken Strings by Param Vir for the Asia Festival in Vienna, Il diluvio universale by Donizetti for the St. Gallen Festival (Switzerland), Korngold´s Die tote Stadt for Opéra du Rhin Strasbourg/Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, which was filmed by Arthaus and is available on DVD, and Boris Godunov  for the National Theatre Brno.
