„The theme of persecution and crimes committed by the state against its own nationals, including the worst (physical liquidation, kidnapping, etc.) is interesting on its own for several reasons. On the one hand, it is always important to remember that such a thing was possible and that we allowed this to happen. On the other hand, there is the urgent question of whether we do not silently tolerate something similar, although more crafty and hidden, right now.“

Director Clemens Bechtel on the topic:
„So far the German look on its past concerning the former communist regime has been mostly from a national perspective. To my knowledge, at least in the world of theatre, there have not been any dialogues between the various Eastern European countries about what had happened before 1989. Parallel Lives Project gives us - the theatre practitioners and audiences - the possibility to learn more about what was the situation in other countries, and whether there was a sort of national way to deal with dictatorship. It gives us the possibility to share our experiences, feelings and our knowledge and this process I find very important also in the sense of a united Europe.“

Author and director Gianina Cârbunariu on the topic:
,,The Project Parallel Lives brings the whole theme to a much bigger level, because it gives the opportunity to different artists from different former communist countries to investigate this recent past, to make connections, parallels and to create performances that are filtered by their personalities, perspectives on the world, and sensibilities to one subject or another. Most importantly thanks to the project, all these performances based on documents found in archives will reach large audiences. Romania was isolated during the era of communism, it was like a prison and no information would come from the West, neither from other Eastern European countries. After ´89 the information started to circulate, but because of the transition, there was no time for analysis, for public discussions, for an exchange of experience regarding our common recent past. The importance of this project lies in the fact that it creates the frame for all this and serves as a meeting point for artists interested in this theme and in exploring it through theatrical means.“

Director Daniel D. Kovács on the topic:
,,Dealing normally with the present issues of one’s life can be achieved by facing the past. When speaking of issues which concern a whole nation, this matter becomes increasingly important. The project provides a platform for this kind of thinking, while the whole process becomes more and more interesting by involving other countries, getting to see to what degree we think alike, as well as seeing in what sense we think differently. Plus, because I am “the young one”, different approach is a must in my case, which makes the whole project a new kind of challenge.“
