Guest of the Opera
After gaining his basic musical education at the Jan Neruda Grammar School, Michal Bragagnolo studied classical signing at the Prague Conservatory, and also attended classes given by Antonio Carangelo. While still a student, he appeared as a guest at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň in the role of Anuchkin in Bohuslav Martinů’s opera The Marriage. After graduating from the conservatory, he went on to study opera singing at the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU) in Prague, under the guidance of Prof. Magdaléna Hajóssyová, where he performed Romeo in Benda’s Romeo and Juliet, Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Vojtěch in Blodek’s In the Well, Jesus in Fila’s The Word Became Flesh, and other roles. He launched his professional career prior to enrolling at HAMU, at the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec, portraying Toby in a production of Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe, directed by Martin Otava. The other roles he sang in Liberec include Rodriguez in Massenet’s Don Quichotte (stage director: Linda Keprtová), Popiel in Nedbal’s operetta Polish Blood (stage director: Gabriela Petráková) and Kryštof of Redern in Sylvie Bodorová’s The Legend of Catherine of Redern (stage director: Martin Otava). In the 2014/15 season, he returned to the J. K. Tyl Theatre, where he sang Beppe in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (stage director: Marián Chudovský), Count Boni in Kálmán’s operetta Die Csárdásfürstin (stage director: Zbyněk Brabec) and Mozart in Tomá Pilař’s production Mozart and Death, a combination of Rendine’s and Rimsky-Korsakov’s one-act operas. In 2015 he debuted at the National Theatre in Prague, in the role of Alyeya in Janáček’s opera From the House of the Dead (stage director: Daniel Špinar). Moreover, he has performed in musicals. At the East Bohemia Theatre in Pardubice he appeared in the role of Ica Bokšaj in Uhde and Štědroň’s Ballad for a Bandit (stage director: Michael Tarant), at the GoJa Music Hall in Prague he sang Brujon and the Officer in Les Miserables (stage director: Petr Novotný) and Raoul in Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (stage director: Petr Novotný).
