Guest of the Opera

Julia Novikova has quickly established herself as one of the leading Russian sopranos of her generation. One of her first extraordinary successes was Gilda in the television production ofRigoletto in 2010 (directed by Marco Bellocchio), which was filmed in the original locations and transmitted live to 148 countries. The opera was conducted by Zubin Mehta and the cast included Plácido Domingo (Rigoletto) and Vittorio Grigolo (Duke). During the last seasons, Julia Novikova sang Königin der Nacht (Die Zauberflöte), Oscar (Un ballo in maschera), Fiakermilli (Arabella), Adina (L‘elisir d’amore) and Zerbinetta (Ariadna auf Naxos) at Vienna State Opera, Amina (La Sonnambula) in Bonn, the title role in Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol at the Quebec Opera Festival and at the Salzburg Festival, Zerbinetta in Toulon, Taipei, Essen and Budapest, the title role of Lakmé in Santiago de Chile, Gilda (Rigoletto) in Trieste, Antibes, St. Gallen, Komische Oper Berlin and Firence, Oscar in Toulouse, Jemmy (Guillaume Tell) in Monte Carlo and Paris, First Flower-Maiden (Parsifal) at Berlin State Opera, Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires or Amor (Orfeo et Euridice) at Berlin State Opera. Highlights of 2016/2017 include Lucia di Lammermoor in Theater Bonn and Musetta (La bohème) in Geneva. Julia Novikova studied opera singing at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in her native city of St. Petersburg, and made her first stage experience during her studies, singing Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Serpina (La serva padrona), and Marfa (The Tsar's Bride). In 2006, she made her professional stage debut with Mariinsky Theatre, performing Flora in The Turn of the Screw (Valery Gergiev conducting). She won the 3rd prize in Wilhelm Stenhammar International Music Competition in Sweden (2006), Audience Prizes in Concours de Genève and in Neue Stimmen in Germany (both 2007), and 1st prize in Musik Debüt, Germany (2008). In 2009, she has won both the 1st Prize and the Audience Prize at Operalia, Plácido Domingo's Opera Competition.
