Biography
Constantin Trinks established himself internationally conducting a series of performances of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier for the centenary celebrations of the opera in 2011 at the Semperoper Dresden and the Bayerische Staatsoper München, featuring Anja Harteros and Renée Fleming. He is one of the youngest maestros to have conducted the complete operatic works of Richard Wagner before turning 40, including Das Liebesverbot in Bayreuth in 2013. Born in Karlsruhe, Trinks soon established himself at the Saarländisches Staatstheater, where he conducted Nono's Intolleranza 1960, La Bohème, Don Giovanni, Das Rheingold, Lohengrin, Salome, Carmen, Don Carlo, La traviata, Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Kullervo (Sallinen) and the European premiere of The First Emperor by Tan Dun. Deeply rooted in the German Kapellmeister tradition, Trinks was subsequently appointed Music Director at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, initiating a complete Der Ring des Nibelungen, acclaimed by the international press, followed by Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal, Fidelio, Aida, as well as the world premiere of Orff's early work Gisei (available on DVD) in combination with De temporum fine comoedia. Constantin Trinks is a regular guest at many of the world’s major opera houses, including the Semperoper Dresden, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Theater an der Wien, Vienna State Opera, Staatsoper Hamburg, Opéra national de Paris, New National Theatre Tokyo, Frankfurt Opera and Opernhaus Zürich. Widely acclaimed was the rediscovery of Jaromír Weinberger's Schwanda, the Bagpiper (Švanda dudák), which Trinks explored and conducted at the Semperoper Dresden in March 2012 (also released on CD by Profil Edition Hänssler). Trinks celebrated the Wagner Bicentenary in 2013 by conducting Der fliegende Holländer in Dresden (premiered there 150 years previously), Tannhäuser in Tokyo, Strasbourg, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Frankfurt, as well as Wagner’s early opera Das Liebesverbot at the Bayreuth Festival. In the 2015/2016 season, Constantin Trinks returned to conduct Così fan tutte and Arabella at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, as well as Das Liebesverbot at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg. Palermo’s Teatro Massimo recently invited him to conduct Henze’s Gisela and the Zurich Opera welcomed him again for a new production of The Turn of the Screw. He opened the previous season in Vienna conducting Marschner’s Hans Heiling at the Theater an der Wien, where he will be returning in 2017/2018 to present a new production of Der Ring. Constantin Trinks is also a refined symphonist. He has conducted orchestras of such renown as the hr-Sinfonieorchester, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Bordeaux, RSO Wien and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After a series of performances of Hans Rott’s Symphony No. 1 in Salzburg, Trinks toured the symphony last autumn with the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken in Germany and France. He was invited to the Barcelona Symphony, the Malaysia Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Philharmonic to give a programme of works by Schumann and Mendelssohn. This autumn, he gave his debut with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio. After an acclaimed debut with the Munich Philharmonic last summer – with Schumann again - he returned there to conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in December. Following his acclaimed recording of Weinberger’s Švanda dudák (Staatskapelle Dresden), his recent live recording of the symphony by Hans Rott – an important predecessor of Mahler – made in Salzburg has also received numerous accolades.
