Zuzana Šimáková

Demi-soloist of the National Theatre Ballet Zuzana Šimáková was born in Košice, Slovakia, where in 1998 she graduated from the Dance Conservatory. In 1998 she was engaged by the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen as a member of the corps de ballet and a solo dancer. Since the 2002–2003 season she has been a member of the National Theatre Ballet in Prague and since 2004 a demi-soloist. While at the J. K. Tyl Theatre, she danced the lead role of Kitri in the ballet Don Quixote, Margherita in La Dame aux camélias, Myrtha in Giselle, the Doll and Nicole Coutet in Edith Piaf, Kate in Devilish Tricks, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte and the Witch in Time on Pain. She also performed concurrently in operettas and musicals – Hello Dolly, Kiss Me Kate, Funny Girl, Šakalí léta (Jackal Years) and Crazy for You. The most noteworthy roles in her repertoire at Prague’s National Theatre include Bianca in Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew, the Bride in the Wedding Couple in Giselle, Evil in Libor Vaculík’s music-dance story Lucrezia Borgia, Pas de trois in Swan Lake, Grand pas de quatre in Ballet Mania, Pas de six in Act III of the ballet Napoli and Effy in La Sylphide. She has also danced in John Cranko’s Onegin, Youri Vàmos’s The Nutcracker – A Christmas Carol and Romeo and Juliet and Youri Grigorovich’s Raymonda. As regards the modern repertoire, she has danced solo roles in choreographies by Petr Zuska: Ways 03, Among the Mountains, Les Bras de Mer, In the Mist, IBBUR, or A Prague Mystery, Requiem and BREL – VYSOTSKY – KRYL / Solo for Three, Jiří Kylián: Stamping Ground, Petite Mort and Sinfonietta, Nacho Duato: Jardí Tancat, Stijn Celis: Black and Blues, Conny Janssen: Álbum Familiar, Itzik Galili: Through Nana’s Eyes, and in Jan Kodet’s children’s ballet Goldilocks. At the national competition of ballet dancers in Brno in 1988 she received an honourable mention and two years later the Award for Choreography and the Grisho Prize. In 2001 she took part in a choreography competition in Pilsen. In addition to interpretation work, she has also devoted to choreography – Marionette, Čas bláznů (The Time of Fools), Propast (The Abyss), Má láska je bůh (My Love Is God), The 5th Element, To Be Continued…, Útěk (Escape), Contact, Royal Opera, Vrakoviště duší (Soul Cemetery), Duha (Rainbow), Zvony osudu (Bells of Destiny), Tango de rosas, Saburau, Pasta e basta, R.U.R. and 6 Halves of a Human. She has created the choreography for the operetta The Poacher’s Foster Daughter and the musical Muzikvariát at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen.
