Zdeněk Harvánek

Biography

Graduated from the Prague conservatoire from professor Jaroslav Horáček’s class and was further artistically led by professor Václav Zítek. Already in his first engagement in the Pilsen opera he studied many roles of his bass register – Figaro (Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro), Don Basilio (Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia), Gremin (Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin), and others. He was a National Theatre Opera soloist between 1986 and 2008. He broadened his repertoire here by especially roles from czech operatic repertoire and Mozart’s operas – Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Publio (La clemenza di Tito) and Masetto (Don Giovanni). Currently he performs here among others as Puccini’s Schaunard (La bohème) and Sciarrone (Tosca), Mozart’s Antonio (Le nozze di Figaro) and Papageno, and Costandis (Martinů: The Greek Passion). Between 1996 and 2008 he had also been sitting as the chief of the National Theatre Opera’s deputy and as the Opera Operations Manager. He has also performed abroad – with the National Theatre ensemble he has visited Japan, Luxemburg, Finland and Germany. In his plentiful concert activities he concentrates on interpretation of songs (Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Musorgski, Shostakovitch, Dvořák, Eben), oratories and cantatas. He co-operates with radio, television and has recorded several recordings (Dvořák’s Dimitrij, Armida, Stabat Mater, Janáček’s Katya Kabanová, and others). Update: July 2008
