Wolfgang Schmidt

Biography

Wolfgang Schmidt, awarded the Chamber Singer title, is an internationally sought-after heroic tenor. He has regularly appeared as a guest on opera stages both in Germany and abroad, among them Wiener Staatsoper, Berliner Staatsoper and Chicago’s Lyric Opera. In the 1992/1993 season he debuted in the role of Tannhäuser at the Bayreuth Festivalu, and later on also celebrated success as Siegfried (Der Ring des Nibelungen). He went on to sing the role of Siegfried at New York’s Metropolitan Opera (1997) and Milan’s La Scala. Since the 1988/1989 season Wolfgang Schmidt has been engaged at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, appearing in such roles as Tristan, Tannhäuser, Erik (The Flying Dutchman), Othello, Herod (Salome) and Florestan (Fidelio).
