Guest of the National Theatre Opera
A basso and a heroic baritone studied in Cologne with professor Renata Peter. As well as many others he didn’t start directly with the „difficult roles“ but with the lyrical ones, such as with the role of the czar in Lortzing‘s Zar und Zimmermann, Tchaikovsky’s Eugen Onegin, Albert in Massenet’s Werther or Mozart’s count in La nozze di Figaro or his Don Giovanni. His vocal range enables him to assert himself also in the bass roles, such as Kaspar in Der Freischütz (1996 Stadttheater Görlitz, 2000 State Oper Prague), later he was awarded the audience price Theo for his role of Water Sprite in Dvořák‘s Rusalka (2004 Anhaltisches Theater Dessau). Thanks to the agility of his voice he can sing also the Rossini’s roles (Mustafa, Don Magnifico, Bartolo). Meyerbeer‘s Bertram in Robert le Diable (Robert the Devil), the role in which he appeared on the stage of the State Opera in Prague in 1999, needs all these abilities. In the State Opera he appeared also in more difficult Italian roles (1999 Nabucco, 2001 Amonasro in Aida, 1998 Simon Mago from Boito‘s Nerone). In Dessau he added for example Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Miller (Luisa Miller), Tonio (Pagliacci), Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana) a Jack Rance (La fanciulla del West).
The National Theatre in Prague offered him to appear in Wagner’s roles. In 2000 he sang Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde under the baton of Jiří Kout. His co-singers were for example Gabriele Schnaut, Kurt Rydl and John Treleaven. The following roles were Friedrich von Telramund (Lohengrin) in Detmold, Amfortas and Klingsor in a concert production of Parsifal with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and a conductor Kent Nagano, then again Kurwenal in Johannes Felsenstein’s and Golo Berg‘s production (recorded on DVD Arthaus). In January 2007 he appeared in the title role of Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky in Anhaltischen Theater Dessau.
In January 2008 he sang Macbeth and in April Amfortas on the same stage. In June 2008 he came out in the role of Jochanaan in Salome by Strauss in Staatstheater Cottbus, in May 2008 he came out as Orest in Elektra by the same composer in Anhaltischen Theater Dessau. On Dessauer Kurt Weill Festival 2010 he successfully appeared as Whitelaw Savory in the performance One Touch of Venus directed by Klaus Seiffert and under the baton of James Holmes.
