Tomáš Kypta

Since the early 1990s, Tomáš Kypta (b. 1967) has designed costumes for a number of theatres throughout the Czech Republic and abroad.  Between 2001 and 2004, he created costumes for 25 productions of operas, operettas, musicals and dramas for the Staadttheater in Bremerhaven. In 2007 he worked for theatres in Augsburg (Bénedict et Beatrice) and Klagenfurt (Rigoletto). In 2012 he was nominated for the prestigious Slovak DOSKY award for his costumes designed for a production of Chekhov’s play The Seagull at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava (directed by David Drábek). Noteworthy is his collaboration with the stage directors J. A. Pitínský (Tristan und Isolde, The Boarding Home, Natalia Mooshabr’s Mice ), V. Morávek (Aquabelles), J. Menzel (Don Giovanni), M. Glaser (Havel in the Land of Cattlemen, Decameron, Robin Hood, The Boss of It All, Mr. Lonely Hearts), J. Průdek (The Magic Pot, La forza del destino, Le nozze di Figaro), P. Gábor (Merlin, Jane Eyre, The Great Gatsby), G. Petráková (Sunset Boulevard), D. Hlubková (The Countess Marica, Orphée aux enfers), V. Věžník (Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Faust, The Devil and Kate, Un ballo en maschera), J. Andělová-Pletichová (Jenufa), J. Seydler (Markéta Lazarová, Hamlet, Peer Gynt, Black Comedy, Romulus the Great, The Visit of the Old Lady), R. Meluzín (The Duchess of Chicago, Carmen, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Tales from the Vienna Woods), J. Deák (The Taming of the Shrew), J. Pokorný (Spartacus), J. Horák (The Sleeping Beauty), R. Ševčík (a ballet version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Picture of Dorian Gray), etc. Extremely fruitful has been his collaboration with Michael Lang (The Taming of the Shrew, As You Like It, Othello, Jenufa, Le baruffe chiozzotte, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Money from Hitler, etc.). Tomáš Kypta also gives private lessons, with his pupils including the young fashion designer Adam Kost.
