Biography

The stage director Steffen Piontek was born in Bitterfeld, Germany in 1962. At Berlin’s Musikhochschule he studied music theatre direction. He worked as assistant stage director for Landestheater in Altenburg and Staatsoper in Dresden, collaborated with the directors Joachim Herz, Wolfgang Wagner and Christine Mielitz. He made his debut as a stage director in 1986 with Donizetti’s L‘elizir d’amore at Rostock’s Volkstheater.
He has directed more than 70 productions, at German theatres: Chemnitz (Die Zauberflöte, Wiener Blut), Dresden (Cinderella, La Clemenza di Tito), Krefeld (Wozzeck), Lübeck (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Freiburg in Breisgau (Manon Lescaut), Halle (Fidelio), Görlitz (Le nozze di Figaro), Cottbus, Weimar, Rostock (Tannhäuser, Don Giovanni, The Queen of Spades), and in other countries - Sweden, Russia (Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg - Die Zauberflöte), Spain (Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona - Cinderella), Austria (Landestheater Salzburg - Hansel und Gretel), Japan (Osaka - Die Fledermaus, Die Zauberflöte, Hansel und Gretel) and Switzerland (Stadttheater Bern - Der Freischütz).
Between 1998 and 2001 he led the opera ensemble of Landesbühnen Sachsen Radebeul and in 2002 assumed the post of general intendant and opera director of Rostock’s Volkstheater.
