Biography

Born in France of Vietnamese origin, Philippe Do made his debut with the Lyon National Opera. He sings on the most prestigious opera stages of the world : La Scala of Milan, Bolchoï of Moscow, Mariinsky of St Petersburg, Lincoln Center in New York, Opéra-Comique and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Zurich Opera, Grand-Théâtre of Geneva, Capitole of Toulouse, La Fenice in Venice, San Carlo in Neaples, Vienna Volksoper, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Festspielhaus of Baden-Baden, Festival dei Due Mondi of Spoleto, Macerata Sferisterio, Chorégies d’Orange.

Philippe Do is a very much sought-after singer for « the beauty of his lyric tenor voice with its refined mezza-voce, and the purity of the style » (Alan Blyth in Opera) especially in the French repertoire in which he has often been compared with Georges Thill and Nicolai Gedda. Thanks to an easy top (until high D) and a strong middle-register, as well as a formidable stage presence, he is at his best in such different works as Robert le Diable  by Meyerbeer (in Sofia), Fra Diavolo  (in Vienna, Paris), Carmen (in Paris, Macerata, Cracow, Zurich) or Adrien by Méhul (in Budapest).

Recent appearances include Roméo et Juliette  at La Fenice in Venice, Don Giovanni  in Roma with Kent Nagano, Les pêcheurs de perles in Verona, Moscow and St Petersburg, Si j’étais roi  by Adam in New Delhi, Amadis de Gaule  by Johann Christian Bach in Paris (CD to be released for Glossa), Lodoïska  by Cherubini in Paris, Rome and Venice (CD to be released for Naïve). 

His roles also include Gérald (Lakmé), Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Faust, Sou Chong (Das Land des Lächelns), Des Grieux (Manon), Werther, Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Le Chevalier de la Force (Le Dialogue des Carmélites), Gonçalve (L’heure espagnole), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Rodolfo (La bohème), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Tom (The Rake’s Progress), Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Alfredo (La traviata), Duca (Rigoletto) or Fenton (Falstaff). He took part to many world-premieres such as Elephant Man by Laurent Petitgirard at the Prague State Opera, Le Premier Cercle  by Gilbert Amy and Il Canto della Pelle by Claudio Ambrosini at the Lyon Opéra, Kwasi & Kwame  by Jonathan Dove in Rotterdam. 

Philippe has sung under the baton of Georges Prêtre, Evgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Maurizio Benini, Christoph Eschenbach, Jan Latham-Koenig, Michel Plasson, Marc Minkowski, Alberto Zedda, Vladimir Jurowski, David Robertson, Claus-Peter Flor or Christopher Hogwood. In concert, he has sung with prestigious orchestras such as Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Orchestre de Paris, Northern Sinfonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre de Chambre de Geneva, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Dutch Radio VARA Orchestra or the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra. 

During the 2012/13 season he will sing Pelléas et Mélisande, Rigoletto  in Prague, Wozzeck in Avignon, Rouen and Reims, Carmen in Paris, La traviata  in Rzeszów, Anna Bolena  in Ostrava, Les bayadères  by Charles Simon Catel in Sofia. Concert appearances include Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Psalmus Hungaricus by Kodály, the Eternal Gospel  by Janáček, the Psalm XIII  by Liszt and Mozart’s Requiem.

His discography includes Le Premier Cercle  by Amy (Harmonia Mundi), both Mozart’s and Gazzaniga’s Don Giovanni (Supraphon), Trouble in Tahiti  by Bernstein (Calliope), Noé  by Bizet (DVD Cascavelle), Carmen (DVD Dynamics), Mathilde de Guise  by Hummel (Brilliant Classics), Marie-Magdeleine  by Massenet (Cascavelle), Verdi’s Requiem (Koch), the Hiérodrams by Henri-Joseph Rigel, orchestral songs by Jean Cras (Timpani) and a recital of French songs with Françoise Tillard (Ed. Maisonneuve & Larose). His two newest recordings for Naxos (Clovis et Clotilde by Bizet under Jean-Claude Casadesus, and Guru by Laurent Petitgirard in world premiere) won the Editor’s choice of Gramophone, and the Choc de Classica

Philippe Do holds an MBA from ESSEC Business School in Paris, and is a graduate from the Mannes College of Music in New York. He won several international competitions, including the prestigious “Toti dal Monte” competition in 2001. He is studying with legendary Mirella Freni.
