Pavel Švingr

Soloist of the Opera

A graduate of the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he studied with Ivan Kusnjer, Pavel Švingr has attended several vocal master classes and workshops, including the ISA PragWienBudapest under the guidance of the bass Leopold Spitzer and the mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink. He has garnered numerous accolades at Czech and international competitions: first prize at the Bohuslav Martinů Song Competition in Prague, second prize in the Junior category at the 2009 International Antonín Dvořák Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary, and victory at the 2011 Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg international competition in Berlin for his portrayal of the Water Sprite in Dvořák’s Rusalka. While still at the Academy, within his opera studies at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna he performed at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, singing Bartolo in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. In 2010 he debuted at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň, with the role of Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. In 2009 he appeared at the State Opera Prague as the Waiter and the Boatman in Yoishi Oida’s famed production of Benjamin Britten’s Death in Venice. In January 2012 he made a successful debut at the National Theatre in Prague, performing in the world premiere of Marko Ivanović’s opera Enchantia, and first appeared at the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec, singing the role of the Hermit in Weber’s Der Freischütz. Subsequently, he collaborated with the South Bohemia Theatre, performing at the Český Krumlov Opera Festival (Verdi: Rigoletto), and the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň (Smetana: The Secret). In 2013 he debuted at the Zomeropera Alden Biesen festival in Belgium (Verdi: Rigoletto). From 2013 to 2015, he was engaged at the North Bohemia Theatre in Ústí nad Labem, where he further extended his repertoire, particularly with the roles of Kecal in The Bartered Bride, Angelotti in Tosca, Ramphis in Aida, the High Priest in Nabucco and Sparafucile in Rigoletto. Since the 2014/15 season he has been a soloist of Prague’s National Theatre Opera, where he has performed in the productions Enchantia, Orango/The Anti-formalist Rayok, Boris Godunov and From the House of the Dead. Pavel Švingrhas also regularly appeared at concerts, with his core repertoire includingDvořák’s Biblical Songs and Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, as well as Hanuš’s unique song cycle Wooden Christ
