Biography

Pavel Ďumbala was one of the first graduates of the Dance Department of the Košice Conservatoire, founded in 1974 by Marilena and Andrej Halász. After completing his studies he moved to Prague, where he was a ballet soloist for almost twenty years, firstly at AUS VN, subsequently in the Pavel Šmok Prague Chamber Ballet, at the Music Theatre in Karlín and finally at the National Theatre. He also made guest appearances at Laterna magica and in the alternative dance ensembles Unia nova and Bohemia balet. In 1994 the Dance Association awarded him the Prize for the Best Male Interpretation Performance for the Prague National Theatre ballets Amarus, Dance-Hall and Field Mass, while the Actors Association nominated him for the Thalia Prize for the title role in the ballet Tchaikovsky. On May 13, 1997 Pavel Ďumbala was appointed ballet chief of the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen. Here, in addition to being a dramatic adviser, pedagogue and ballet master, he also began to work as a choreographer, initially in opera, operetta, drama and, finally, in ballet. In the 1999/2000 season he presented his first full-length piece, Don Quixote. During the 2002/2003 season he reworked both the libretto and choreography of the ballet Wary In Vain. After six successful years in Pilsen, he returned to Prague. On July 1, 2003 he was appointed head of the ballet of the Prague State Opera and the connected Pavel Šmok Prague Chamber Ballet.
