He graduated from the Prague conservatoire where he studied with professors Jan Berlík and Teodor Šrubař. During his first engagement in Liberec (1963-72) he has created more then fifty characters from the baritone field from domestic and international opera repertoire. From 1972 to 1980 he was a soloist of the State theatre in Ostrava where he broadened his repertoire even further. Since 1981 he has been a National Theatre in Prague soloist. After the split of the theatre into two separate ensembles he worked in the Prague State Opera until 1997 and then returned to the National Theatre stage, where he stayed til the end of 2007.
From the most important roles he has created here let us remind of at least characters in Smetana’s operas (Libuše, The Bartered Bride, Dalibor, The Secret and others), in Dvořák's The Jacobin, Harašta in Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, Germont in Verdi's La traviata, Steuermann in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Morales in Bizet's Carmen and Leon Klinghoffer in John Adams’s The Death of Klinghoffer.
His concert activities are also rich. He concentrates mainly on lyric repertoire and ecclesiastical music but includes also opera arias. He co-operates with symphony orchestras, radio and television. He has performed at opera houses in Germany, Austria, Finland, Poland, Italy and Switzerland.
