Biography

Ondrej Olos studied conducting at the Conservatory in Žilina, Slovakia (1998–2003), and at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU), graduating in 2008. While still a student, he served as assistant conductor of the conservatory symphony orchestra. In 2006, he was awarded the Leoš Janáček Prize for his account of the chamber version of the opera The Cunning Little Vixen for JAMU’s Chamber Opera. At the Janáček Brno festival in 2008, he conducted the JAMU students’ staging of Jenůfa in its original 1904 version. In 2006, he joined the Janáček Opera of the National Theatre in Brno, where he worked as a repetiteur, from 2007 as an assistant conductor and from 2009 as a conductor, being in charge of the productions of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Verdi’s Macbeth, Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Dvořák’s Rusalka, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Puccini’s Turandot and Tosca, Medek’s Alice in Bed, Nedbal’s Polish Blood and other operas. Moreover, he has conducted performances of Janáček’s Jenůfa and The Makropulos Case at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites in Košice, Slovakia and Janáček’s Katya Kabanova in Aarhus, Denmark. As a guest, he has conducted Czech and Slovak orchestras, including the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava, the Prague Philharmonia, the Brno Philharmonic, the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Zlín, etc. Ondrej Olos is also a sought-after pianist, and he has frequently performed with the Slovak violinist Milan Paľa, primarily focusing on contemporary music.
