Biography

The Canadian mezzo-soprano Mireille Lebel, born in Vancouver, studied at the University of Toronto and the University of Montreal. She received scholarships from the Canada Council and the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation and further honed her skills as a member of the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. Following her victory in the 2009 Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques Competition, she was invited to the Theater Erfurt, where she has been engaged since the 2009/10 season. Her repertoire includes the roles of Verdi’s Flora (La traviata) and Fenena (Nabucco), Bizet’s Carmen, Delibes’s Mallika (Lakmé), Puccini’s Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Ravel’s Concepcion (L'heure espagnole) and the Child (L'enfant et les sortilèges), Haydn’s Lisetta (Il Mondo della Luna), Mozart’s Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Idamante (Idomeneo), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro), Sesto and Annio (La clemenza di Tito) and the Second Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Massenet’s Myrtale (Thaïs) and Dorothée (Cendrillon), Monteverdi’s Messenger (L'Orfeo) and Nero (L'incoronazione di Poppea), Handel’s Ottone (Agrippina), Scarlatti’s Dorilla (Il Tigrane), Purcell’s Zempoalla (The Indian Queen), Humperdinck’s Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Rossini’s Cenerentola, Tchaikovsky’s Olga (Eugene Onegin), Mussorgsky’s Fyodor (Boris Godunov), Strauss’s Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) and Bröder’s Margaret (Die Frauen der Toten). On concert stages, she has performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’s Zwei Gesänge (Op. 91), Berio’s Folk Songs, Berlioz’s song cycle Les nuits d’été, Beethoven’s Mass in C minor and Bach’s cantatas. Mireille Lebel has worked with the conductors B. Labadie, I. Taurins, J.−M. Zeitouni, S. Baechli, J. Lacombe and Y. Nezet-Séguin, L’Orchèstre Symphonique de Trois−Rivières, the San Antonio, Houston, Calgary, New Jersey and Edmonton Symphony Orchestras, the Malaysian Philharmonic, the McGill Chamber Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, etc. She has performed at the Pacific Opera Victoria, in Montreal, at the Opéra de Nice, Opéra de Tours, Theater Basel and Opéra Théatre de Metz, and appeared at the Boston Early Music Festival, the Blumental Festival in Tel Aviv, the Montreal Chamber Music Festival and the Lanaudière Music Festival. Mireille Lebel is featured on recordings of M.-A. Charpentier’s operas La descente d’Orphée aux enfers and La couronne de fleurs. In August 2015, she made her debute in State Opera in Prague as Carmen.
