Milan David

Guest of the Opera

The photographer, designer and pedagogue Milan David (b. 1959 in České Budějovice) studied set design at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He worked for the Dlouhá, Na Fidlovačce, Vinohrady and Pod Palmovkou theatres in Prague and over the long term has collaborated with the Strašnice Theatre. Moreover, he has co-operated with stages in Slovakia (Banská Bystrica, Nitra), Poland (Warsaw, Lodz, Katowice), Russia, Spain, Sweden, Argentina (Teatro Colón) and the USA. He has created approximately 300 theatre projects. His photographs have been displayed in Prague (Josef Sudek Studio, Karolinum, Vyšehrad Gallery), Brno and Ostrava, as well as in Brussels, Luxembourg and Paris (the PARIS PHOTO 2003 international exhibition). From 1993 to 1998 he worked as a pedagogue in Spain (Centro Andaluz de Teatro in Seville) and between 2000 and 2005 in Buenos Aires, La Plata, Mexico and Bogota. He teaches at the set design department at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, collaborates with Czech Television and the Barrandov Film Studios. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Alfréd Radok Award for 2003. Milan David designed the sets for the stage director Ivan Krejčí’s acclaimed production of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Anna Bolena at the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre in Ostrava, where in June 2015 they are scheduled to create together a staging of Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier.
