Markku Vanninen

Biography

Markku Vanninen studied under Petri Antikainen at the Tampere Conservatory, graduating as a teacher of singing in 1999. He has also studied under Reijo Toivokoski and Kim Borg, among others. With the Tampere Opera Vanninen has performed the role of Sciarrone in Tosca, Calchas in Iphigénie en Aulide, the Officer in Barbiere di Siviglia, Topias in Marja Jotuni’s The Rib of A Man, the Captain in Manon Lescaut, Pietro in Simon Boccanegra, Tom in Un Ballo in Maschera, and the leading male role Ari Onassis Jackie O by Michael Daugherty, which had its European premiere in Tampere Opera in the autumn of 2000. Vanninen has guested with the Vaasa and Pori Operas and at the Lohtaja church music festival. He has performed in four Finnish premieres, Erkkila’s Fisherman, Kuusisto’s Daughters of the Fatherland and The Ring of the King, and Antti Nissilä’s Let’s Take the Car. Markku Vanninen has performed as a soloist with many choirs; he has held lied concerts throughout Finland, and he also performed in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was a member of the soloist group in the Association of Finnish Opera 1999-2000 and Musician of the Year at the Tampere Conservatory 1997.
