Biography

Guest of the National Theatre Opera. The Canadian tenor Mario Zhang is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was a finalist of the Placido Domingo International Voice Competition and the prestigious Metropolitan Opera competition in New York. In 2006 he debuted to great acclaim in Zurich as Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot. In the same year he excelled in Verdi’s Don Carlos staged at the International Music Festival in Chiemgau. He has performed at the Opera in Wexford, the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen, the National Theatre Opera in Warsaw, Oper der Stadt Köln, Opera Ireland in Dublin, Niedersäschsische Staatsoper in Hanover, in Kiel, at the festival in Schwerin, in Cleveland, Sacramento and Sarasota. He has also collaborated with the Canadian Opera Company and Pacific Opera Victoria, sung at the Vancouver Opera. On these prominent stages he appeared in Verdi’s operas Rigoletto, La traviata and Aida, in Puccini’s La bohème and Tosca, Bizet’s Carmen, Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Janáček’s Jenůfa, and other grand tenor roles of the world repertoire. Mario Zhang has also performed at concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as with symphony orchestras in Toronto, Singapore, Calgary, etc. Update: April 2008
