Biography
Permanent guest of the National Theatre Opera.
Mezzo-soprano Marina Domashenko is in demand at major opera houses and concert series around the world. A native of Russia, she received training at the Kemerovo Institute of Arts (pianist and orchestra conductor), and the Urals State Conservatory (class of opera singing).
She won first prizes at two international opera competitions: The International Dvořák Singing Competition (Czech Republic, 1997) and The First International G. Masini Singing Competition (Italy, 1999). In November 2002 in Philadelphia (USA), Marina Domashenko won the special prize ‘The DIVA’.
She made her European debut in 1998 in Prague (Tchaikovsky’s Paulina in The Queen of Spades) and has since enjoyed an international career. She has performed in Italy, USA, Japan, France, Austria, England, Germany, Holland, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, Norway and Russia. Her American debut took place at the San Francisco Opera (Saint-Saëns’s Dalila in Samson et Dalila) at a Gala-2000 concert together with Plácido Domingo.
Her past highlight engagements include Bizet’s Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, at Arena di Verona, at the Staatsoper in Berlin (conductor Daniel Barenboim), in Wiener Staatsoper, at San Francisco Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, The Norwegian National Opera, and Amfiteatro Romano di Cagliari; among others Bellini’s Adalgisa (Norma) in Berlin, Rimski-Korsakov’s Ljubasha (The Tsar’s Bride) in Opernhaus Zürich, Verdi’s Maddalena (Rigoletto) at the MET in New York and London Covent Garden, Fenena (Nabucco) at the MET, Wiener Staatsoper and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Pauline at the Opéra National de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Strauss’s Princ Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) and Tchaikovsky’s Olga (Eugene Onegin) at the Opéra National de Paris.
On concert stages she has performed in and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis at the Barbican Hall, London and at the Lincoln Center in New York, in Musorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death with New York Philharmonic conducted by Riccardo Chailly at Avery Fisher Hall in New York, in Khachaturian’s cantata Ode of Joy at Carnegie Hall in New York, in Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, as well as in Berlin, Lisbon and Athens, in Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Montpellier International Festival and many others.
Her discography includes the solo CDs Mezzo-soprano Opera Arias and Rafaelo by Anton Arensky (World Premiere), Verdi’s Falstaff (Live with London Symphony Orchestra), CD The Queen of Spades (great scenes), Carmen from Arena di Verona (DVD) etc.
