Biography

Lubor Cukr, stage director, was born in Prague. From an early age he experienced acting and dancing, and performed in almost 2000 performance of musical productions in Prague (among others, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita). In 1999, he joined the Prague State Opera as assistant stage director in residence and had been working there with international stage directors such as David Pountney, Heinz Lukas-Kinderman, Arnaud Bernard, Philippe Godefroid, Roman Hovenbitzer or Yoshi Oida. In 2009 Lubor Cukr revived Dominik Neuner’s 1992 successful production of Verdi’s Otello  under musical direction of Heiko Mathias Förster. In 2011 he has staged also for the Prague State Opera a new production of Verdi’s Il trovatore  with Jan Latham-Koenig as musical director. He made his début as stage director in 2003, for the company Dĕtská opera Praha (Children opera Prague), with the world premiere of Hry, a children opera by Jan F. Fischer, at the Kolowrat Theatre in Prague. In 2005, for the same company, Lubor Cukr presented Britten’s The Little Sweep, with his own translation of the libretto in Czech. In 2006, he staged a historically informed reconstruction of Don Giovanni  for the company Opera MozArt at the Estates Theatre in Prague. This successful production was performed three consecutive seasons. Elsewhere, he staged a production of Puccini´s Tosca for the Opera Week in Kutná Hora (2008), and made his debut as stage director in the field of musical with a production of Dáma na kolejích (“Streetcar Lady”) at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň (2009). At the Silesian Theatre in Opava he staged Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito (2010) and Antonín Dvořák’s The Devil and Kate (2013).

Lubor Cukr has likewise often worked with the Opéra de Nice: with Gilbert Blin on Vivaldi's Rosmira fedele (2003), Handel's Teseo (2007) and Antonio Scarlatti’s Il Tigrane (2012), with Jean-Claude Riber for Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos (2004), and with Olivier Bénézech for Mozart's Idomeneo (2004) and Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande  (2005), this last production being also staged at the Opéra de Toulon (2007). In 2008, he joined Gilbert Blin in mounting a semi-stage production of Scarlatti´s oratorio La Giuditta, with the participation of the Ensemble Baroque de Nice, a project which made a successful tour of several music festivals in France during the summer of 2009. In 2008 he staged a new production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro  for the Opéra de Nice. In 2003 Lubor Cukr became a member of the Académie Desprez, a cultural institution affiliated to Stockholm´s Drottningholms Slottsteater.
