Klaus Gärditz

Biography

Fascinated by the potentialities of light, after training to be an electrician Klaus Gärditz decided to choose the job of theatre lighting technician. He first worked as a stage electrician in Neuss‘ Landestheater and in 1962 went over to Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He began as a lighting technician, then attained the master title in his branch, became a lighting supervisor and, later on, the chief lighting supervisor. Finally, in 1991 he assumed the position of lighting director of Deutsche Oper am Rhein, as well as the tasks of the lighting designer. He has worked with the production team for such renowned stage directors as Michael Hampe, Kurt Horres, Günther Krämer, August Everding and Adolf Dresen. Klaus Gärditz has been responsible for a host of new productions by Deutsche Oper am Rhein. In addition, he has also designed lighting for the Rhine opera’s ballet, working closely with Erich Walter, Heinz Spoerli and Youri Vàmos among others. He also provided the lighting for numerous guest performances, for example, in Nizza and Istanbul.
