Josef Hajna

Biography

Studied singing at the Brno conservatoire, however he emphasises that he was prepared for his artistic career above all by professor J.Logačevová in Liberec with whom he studied privately. At the beginning of the eighties he further developed his vocal technique at a scholarship with professor Leib in Berlin. After a short engagement in Liberec (1962-65) he accepted an engagement in South-Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice (1965-79), where he created many important roles of Czech and international opera repertoire and sang also in operetta. His artistic growth was contributed to by guest performances and partial engagements in opera houses in Brno, Olomouc, and Ostrava. He has been a National Theatre soloist since 1979 and performed here Jeník in The Bartered Bride, Vít in The Secret, Lukáš in The Kiss, Jarek in The Devil’s Wall, Prince in Rusalka, Jiří in Jacobin, Kudrjáš in Káťa Kabanová, Števa in Jenůfa, Lenský in Eugene Onegin, Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Duke in Rigoletto, and many others. He has successfully performed also in modern pieces, such as Mephistopheles in Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel. His concert activities are extensive as well as his cooperation with radio and television.
