Jiří Waňka


Born in Prague in 1986, studied at the Prague Dance Conservatory under Prof. Jaroslav Slavický, Pavel Ždichynec, Alena Drapalíková and Nelly Danko (graduating in 2006). He represented the school at many performances both at home and abroad (Bratislava, Valenciennes, Zittau, Magdeburg). He has appeared in Evening Songs (choreography: J. Kylián), Bolero (choreography: P. Zuska), Help Me! (choreography: A. Drapalíková), Sleeping Beauty – the roles of the Cavalier and Blue Bird (choreography: J. Slavický, after M. Petipa), Lucky Seven – the role of the Cowboy (choreography: D. Stránský, T. Rychetský), Talking to Frida (choreography: J. Kodet), Polovtsian Dances (choreography: J. Slavický, after M. Fokin), Trojan Games (choreography: R. North), Valachian Games, etc. In 2006 he became a member of the National Theatre Ballet. His classical solo roles include: Benno, Pas de trois in Swan Lake (choreography: K. Greve), Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet (choreography: Y. Vamos), Gurn in La Sylphide, 1st variation, Pas de six from Act III in the ballet Napoli (choreography: F. Andersen,after A. Bournonville). Moreover, he has danced in the ballets Giselle, Raymonda, The Nutcracker – A Christmas Carol and Onegin. As regards the modern repertoire, he has performed in Jiří Kylián’s Sinfonietta and Last Touch, Petr Zuska’s Brel – Vysotsky – Kryl / Solo for Three, D.M.J. 1953–1977 and A Little Touch of The Last Extreme, Jan Kodet’s Goldilocks, Zuzana Šimáková’s 6/2 of a Human, Johan Greben and Uri Ivgi’s Santa Says Cut It!, Hana Turečková’s Ciacona – Unity of Manifoldness and White is the Colour of Sorrow, Dana Palátová’s Dreaming, and Mattia Mantellato’s Plaisir d’amour. Within the ballet evening Miniatures at the Estates Theatre, he created the choreographies La Persona, The Centaur and Jacqueline du Pré. He has received a number of accolades: 2nd place, the Excellence category, Valenciennes (France 2004); 1st place, the Pré-Preprofesional category, Valenciennes (France 2006); Honourable Mention with prize, 2nd international ballet competition in Brno (Czech Republic 2006).
