Biography

Born in Brno, Jan Šťáva studied voice from an early age with his mother, the singing teacher and opera singer Zdeňka Rybecká. He graduated from the P. Křížkovský Grammar School in Brno under the guidance of Irena Vašíčková-Pollini and during his studies he won several voice competitions (Prague Singer, Dušek Competition, etc.). In 2006 he recorded his first CD, Dvořák‘s Biblical Songs and Afro-American Spirituals. In 2007 he began studying at the Janáček Academy of Music (JAMU) in Brno, in the class of Zdeněk Šmukař. Since 2003 he has performed as a guest at the JAMU Chamber Opera. In 2007 he attended master classes led by José Cura in Nancy, where he won the Grand Prix and was given the opportunity to work with the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy (Mozart’s Idomeneo in 2009 and Puccini’s La rondine in 2012). Since January 2010 he has been soloist of the Janáček Opera in Brno. As a guest artist, he has worked with the Moravian Theatre in Olomouc, the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre in Ostrava, the Ensemble Opera Diversa and is a founding member of the Wopera-sérija association. He has been collaborated with the Prague National Theatre since his debut in May 2011 as Osmin in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail. In January 2015 he created Alidoro (Rossini: La cenerentola) at the Opéra de Toulon, in May 2015 he sang Beneš in a concert performance of Smetana’s Dalibor in London (BBC Symphony Orchestra under Jiří Bělohlávek), in September 2015 he sang Don Iñigo Gomez in a concert version of Ravel‘s L'heure espagnole at the Angers Nantes Opéra and in May 2016 he made his debute at the Opéra National de Paris as police inspector (Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier).
