Biography

The Serbian soprano Gabrijela Ubavić came second at the 2012 Antonín Dvořák International Voice Competition in Karlovy Vary, received the J. K. Tyl Theatre Prize and the Conductor František Drs Prize. In 2013 she won Prague’s National Theatre Award and the Audience Prize. At the J. K Tyl Theatre in Plzeň, she has performed the roles of Pamina (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), Adina (Donizetti: L’elisir d’amore) and Gilda (Verdi: Rigoletto), for the latter of which she was short-listed for the 2011 Thalia Award. Her repertoire also includes Romilda (Handel: Serse), Norina (Donizetti: Don Pasquale), Musetta (Puccini: La bohème), Zerlina (Mozart: Don Giovanni) and Violetta (Verdi: La traviata). In addition to the Czech Republic, she has performed in Serbia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, France and Italy.

Gabrijela Ubavić was born in Požarevac, Serbia, where she studied the piano. She subsequently attended the Faculty of Music Arts in Belgrade, studying voice. Her first appearance on stage was at the National Theatre in Belgrade, singing the role of the First Boy (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte, October 2003). After moving to Vienna, she continued to hone her skills, attending voice lessons with the Serbian pedagogue Marija Sklad-Sauer. In 2011, she completed her postgraduate studies at Vienna’s Academy of Music and Performing Arts (in the classes of the Swiss stage director Reto Nickler and the conductor Ivan Pařík). Moreover, Gabrijela Ubavić has attended the summer school for young artists in Bayreuth and master classes given by José Cura in Nancy and Montserrat Caballé in Zaragoza. In November 2013, at the 48th International Competition Antonín Dvořák in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, Ubavic won first prize in the opera category, prize of National Theatre Prague, public prize and prize of Mayor of Karlovy Vary – Laureate of competition .
