Eva Hornyáková

Guest of the Opera

Slovak soprano Eva Hornyáková studied singing at the Košice Conservatory and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She is a semi-finalist of international singing competitions Competizione delll´opera in Dresden (2006) and Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athéna (2009). Other competition successes include the final of a competition in Bayreuth and the final of the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna. In 2006, she made her debut, in the role of Countess Almaviva (Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro), at the Opera of the Slovak National Theatre (SNT) in Bratislava, and she became soloist of this opera house. Her signature roles include Mimi (Puccini: La bohème); she sang it in Spain’s La Coruña, at the Staatstheater Braunschweig in Germany, at the State Opera in Banská Bystrice, with the Opera of the SNT at the Pafos Aphrodite festival in Cyprus (2010) and in an international production in Japan in autumn 2010. She portrayed Mařenka (Smetana: The Bartered Bride) at her home theatre and also took that role, along with Micaela (Bizet: Carmen), at the Open Air Festival in Gars am Kamp, Austria. In 2009–2010 she added to her repertoire Mozart’s Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (conducted by Friedrich Heider) and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Eva Hornyáková sang alongside world renowned bass Paatu Burchuladze in a production of Gounod’s Faust at the SNT, winning an award from the magazine Hudobný život for best female vocal performance for her Marguerite. In concert she has sung works by the likes of Mahler, Brahms, Beethoven, Verdi, Dvořák and Janáček under conductors such as Ondrej Lenárd, Vladimír Válek, Paolo Gatto, Heiko Mathias Förster and with singers including Miroslav Dvorský. Her successes number a performance with the winner of Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition 2006, Mexican tenor David Lomelí at the State Opera Prague (March 17, 2010) and participation in the Plácido Domingo‘s Operalia competition 2010 at La Scala.
