Biography

Tenor Charles Kim’s repertoire includes such Wagnerian roles as Lohengrin, Parsifal, Siegmund (Die Walküre), Erik (Der fliegende Holländer)and Arindal (Die Feen) as well as roles in Italian operas, such as Manrico (Il trovatore), Radames (Aida), Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Cavaradossi (Tosca) and Calaf (Turandot). After completing his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Charles Kim worked with the stage director Christine Mielitz (2003–2011) at the Theater Dortmund. Some of the numerous operas Kim has sung during his tenure in Dortmund include Il Trittico, Les contes d'Hoffmann, Cavalleria rusticana, Ariadne auf Naxos, Carmen, and Oedipus Rex. His guest engagements have led him to work with Hubert Soudant and the Tokyo Symphony, Carlo Montanaro at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, Anton Witt and the Polish National Symphony and Myung Whun Chung and the Seoul Philharmonic. In addition to opera roles, Charles Kim is also a keen concert singer and his repertoire includes Beethoven’ Symphony No. 9, Verdi ’s Requiem, Bruckner ’s Te Deum, Mahler ’s Das Lied von der Erde, and Liszt ’s Faust Symphony. He made his debut Lohengrin performance in the new production of Wagner’s opera at the National Theatre in Prague on June 10, 2017.
